A person who is an adult can be described as a person or animal who has attained full growth.The biological definition of the word means an animal reaching sexual maturity and thus capable of reproduction. Within the human realm, adult is a reference to the social and legal aspects. In contrast to a person who is that isn't considered an adult, or "minor", the legal adult has reached majority making them self-sufficient as well as responsible and competent. Legal adults can also be referred to as a major. The point at which a person becomes an adult legally is 18, however, the definition of maturity may differ based on the legal or country system as well as the state of their mental health.

Adulthood refers to the period that a person has reached full maturity both in physical and mental development. Adulthood, as it is typically understood, is at the age of around 20 or 21. The age of old is 60 years later than middle years. Young adulthood starts between years of between 18 to 30. The middle age stage begins from in the 30s to the 60s. The transition to late adulthood begins around the mid-60s. When we reach the early phases of adulthood (between 20 and 40) the bodies of our children are at their peak of maturity although our weight and height might increase a bit. During young adulthood we reach the top of our physical abilities.
